On To The Regionals

The Jefferson County High School Patriots Baseball Team took home field advantage to the extreme on Thursday night as they shut out neighboring County rival Morristown West in the District Championship Tournament and retained the title of District 2 AAA Champions for the second year in a row. The Patriots came on hard early and took a quick six run lead in the first inning. They added up runs in the second and third to begin the fourth inning with an 11 run lead. The Morristown Trojans never answered the call and in the end the Patriots shut out the Trojans 11-0 to take the win and keep the District crown. A slew of Patriots made All Conference Thursday night. Jake Farr, Blake Paschal, Austin Hutchinson, Colton Bales, Hunter Rich, Brandon Leonard, Casey Henshaw and Bristoe Bible represented Jefferson County as All Conference.  The Patriots will host Science Hill Monday, May 14, 2012 for the first round of the Regional Playoffs.

Homegrown Talent
By: David Swann

When it comes to football recruiting, the University of Tennessee usually can’t rely on in-state recruiting to amount for much of their signing class.  While Florida puts out enough high school talent on a yearly basis to fill several rosters and Georgia isn’t far behind, Tennessee has arguably only topped Kentucky and Arkansas in SEC states regarding talent.  Perhaps times are changing because this year, several Tennesseans show up prominently on everyone’s recruiting list.  Here are a few to keep your eye on.

Jason Carr – 6’6” 270 lb. DE.  Committed to UT.  Carr is a prototype 3-4 defensive end.  He has the frame to add weight and the athleticism few big men possess.

Camion Patrick – 6’2” 215 lb. WR.  Committed to UT.  Patrick, from the Knoxville area, is a physical WR with tremendous talent.  At times, he looks like a man amongst boys.  The biggest knock on Patrick is whether his competition makes him look better than he is.

Jalen Ramsey – 6’1” 190 lb. Cornerback.  Everyone wants Ramsey and for good reason.  He is one of the best DB prospects in the country.  Tennessee is in good shape here, but it’s not over yet.

Jalen Reeves-Maybin – 6’1” 210 lb. Athlete.  Maybin can literally play anywhere on the field.  Teams like Ohio State are making a run, but getting him away from the Big Orange will be hard.

Frank Herron – 6’5” 240 lb. Linebacker.  Herron is perfect for Tennessee’s new jack linebacker position.  He is friends with Cameron Clear and Jarnell Stokes, which is good for Tennessee.  It looks like a UT, LSU battle right now.

Austin Sanders – 6’5” 310 lb. Offensive lineman.  Committed to UT.  Sanders has been committed for awhile now, but don’t forget his name.  He is a big time talent.

Christian Morris – 6’6” 300 lb. Offensive line.  Morris moves well for his size and could be a tackle on the college level.  UT is in good position, but will have to fight off several teams, including Kiffin’s USC Trojans.  Signing Morris could be a real battle.

Vonn Bell – 6’1” 190 lb. Safety.  Bell plays in Georgia but is from Chattanooga.  He is one of the best safeties in the country and is also good friends with UT linebacker Jacques Smith. UT is said to be his dream school, but he hasn’t committed yet and is looking hard at other schools.

Jordan Wilkins – 6’1” 200 lb. Running back.  Wilkins has ties to Vanderbilt, but is simply too good to pass up.  UT is making a run and right now, he is listening.  The Vanderbilt ties will be hard to overcome.

Mack Weaver – 6’5” 225 lb. Tight end/Athlete.  UT is recruiting Weaver as an athlete and it’s obvious why.  Weaver does it all on the field and does it well.  His stock has just started rising and the Vols have only recently offered, but he is a name Vol fans should keep in mind.

Donald Gray Jr. – 5’10” 160 lb. Cornerback.  Gray has true track speed and plays a physical brand of football despite his size.  UT is at the top of his list.
